Go Girl!

One day a 6 year old girl was sitting in a classroom. The teacher was going to explain evolution to the children.

The teacher asked a little boy: Tommy do you see the tree outside?

TOMMY: Yes.

TEACHER: Tommy, do you see the grass outside?

TOMMY: Yes.

TEACHER: Go outside and look up and see if you can see the sky.

TOMMY: Okay. (He returned a few minutes later) Yes, I saw the sky.

TEACHER: Did you see God up there?

TOMMY: No.

TEACHER: That's my point. We can't see God because he isn't there. Possibly he just doesn't exist.

A little girl spoke up and wanted to ask the boy some questions.

The teacher agreed and the little girl asked the boy: Tommy, do you see the tree outside?

TOMMY: Yes.

LITTLE GIRL: Tommy do you see the grass outside?

TOMMY: Yessssss!

LITTLE GIRL: Did you see the sky?

TOMMY: Yessssss!

LITTLE GIRL: Tommy, do you see the teacher?

TOMMY: Yes

LITTLE GIRL: Do you see her brain?

TOMMY: No

LITTLE GIRL: Then according to what we were taught today in school, she possibly may not even have one!
(You Go Girl!)

again

Since I've posted the music link up from the post before with Rob and Joanie I have been listening to that bit over and over. Joanie has such a beautiful voice and Rob's talent on his guitar is amazing. I forgot to mention Michael Rag-Rag (real last name!) rocking out too on the drum thing. Beautiful music! Rob sent me a CD of Joanie's music, and hopefully i'll get it here soon enough!!

Rocking out in Kingston-upon-Thames

This was from last year but just was reminded of it. I can't figure out how to copy this video onto my computer to post, so if anyone out there in internet world knows please help me! Otherwise enjoy the sounds.

Its Rob and Joanie Dingman-missionaries sent from Seattle to Southwest London. Pastor Rob is rocking out on his guitar while Joanie takes the lead. I love their sound and miss their faces! The amazing thing about this day was that it was one of only 8 days in 2 months that it didn't rain. We prayed for sun for a week and God Granted us Sun!

Enjoying the Ocean

I am full of pictures today.

Confidence

Amen!

China's Cove at Point Lobos.

He makes everything glorious.

Emily's Blocks

I also found this block in my blocks I brought to my classroom. They were my family's and I guess my older sister thought they belonged to her. Your handwriting was pretty good Emily. Didn't you know writing on blocks was wrong? Naughty... Rocky loves you though.

Nemiha

I found this in my school stuff. I don't know where it came from but when I was unpacking boxes it appeared. I think it is from 2nd grade when I moved from CA to WA and I promised my best friend I would write her all the time. It was tramatic to leave CA and move to a goofy sounding town in WA called Walla Walla. I never sent it to her, so it doesn't count that I didn't follow through, right? Nemiha lives in Utah now and just had her first baby! Hi Nemiha!!

Fiesta Seaside Style

Yesterday Hannah and I crashed a Fiesta in Seaside. My little girls invited me to go, so we were just going to stop by, say hi and leave. Instead we were coaxed into spending over an hour at the party. We left when we starting getting requests to dance. It was a little boy's first birthday party. There was a woman behind a grill making Asada tacos sprinkled with lime, cilantro and onions. Hannah and I were the only white people there. There was a bouncehouse for the kids, Pinatas and this interesting balloon game. It was quite an experience. It was fun to get a first-hand look at another culture. One picture is of a balloon game played like a Pinata, only candy doesn't come out...only balloons. The other photo is of the little baby who for some crazy reason loves me so much--so of course I love him back.

After we experienced Mexican life, we then traveled to Pacific Grove where we watched the Feast of Lantern celebration with a play and fireworks. We are so multi-cultural.

Fireworks

This is for anyone who loves fireworks. I can't explain it, but there is something so beautiful about blowing things up. :-)

Psalm 37:4

I was exploring Point Lobos today and enjoying the beauty of the central coast and I felt God was telling me to look up Psalm 37:4. Since I had my mini bible with me, I flipped it open and it was a beautiful verse. "Delight yourself in the Lord and HE will give you the desires of your heart." I never knew really how to delight myself in the Lord, but being in such a beautiful place I got it. Websters says delight means: a high degree of gratification. I was so grateful to just be standing in such a beautiful created place. Pictures to come tomorrow....its late tonight.

Secret Spot

Last night I discovered a beautiful place on the central coast where you can smell the roses on the beach, or enjoy a comfy seat in an inside building with a beautiful arragement of furniture and a nice clean clean bathroom. I stole a pen, so if you see me taking notes somewhere, like at church...take a peak at the pen.

Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii

A judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so that she could change the name she hated - Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. Judge Rob Murfitt said that the name embarrassed the nine-year-old and could expose her to teasing.

He attacked a trend of giving children bizarre names, citing several examples.
Officials had blocked Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy and Yeah Detroit, he said, but Number 16 Bus Shelter, Violence and Midnight Chardonnay had been allowed. One mother wanted to name her child O.crnia using text language, but was later persuaded to use Oceania, he said.

'Social handicap'
The ruling, in the city of New Plymouth on the North Island, was handed down in February but only made public now.

UNUSUAL NAMES
Allowed: Violence; Number 16 Bus Shelter; Midnight Chardonnay; Benson and Hedges (twins)
Blocked: Yeah Detroit; Stallion; Twisty Poi; Keenan Got Lucy; Sex Fruit; Fat Boy; Cinderella Beauty Blossom; Fish and Chips (twins)

The name issue emerged during a custody hearing for the young girl - who had refused to tell her friends her name and went simply by "K". "The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," Judge Murfitt wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii's name has now been changed and the custody case resolved, court officials said. New Zealand does not allow names that would cause offence or that are longer than 100 characters, Registrar-General Brian Clarke said.

Officials often tried to talk parents out of particularly unusual choices that could embarrass their offspring, the Associated Press news agency quoted him as saying.

No More Summer Vacation

They moved my boxes today!! I have been waiting all summer. The first week of June I spent my evenings throwing things into boxes and writing 'stuff' on them. I managed to pack up 55 boxes worth of 'educational' stuff and it was moved today along with all my furniture. 20 desks, 4 tables, 35 chairs, 4 computers. I was able to unpack 15 of them!!

I am suppose to go into school next Wednesday officially, but there would be no way to unpack 55 boxes in 2 days. So....summer vacation is no more. Now I'm counting down the days until October Break. :-)

22 July 2008

Tuesday

Today I went to Office Depot to get 1 cent folders that are usually .99 cents. Only problem is they only let you get 10 per customer. I managed to get 50 by going up to strangers in line and asking them to purchase 10 for me. I'd give them ten cents and I'd get ten folders. Kind of cheating

Currently a man is setting traps for mice underneath my sink. He was explaining to me that mice poop that is soft means they are around. After three weeks mice poop turns hard which means they haven't been around in a while.... GROSS!!

Wii had fun

Last night Hannah and I went over to our new friends Mike and Eliza's home for some sweet fellowship. I met them a few weeks ago at our BBQ/Bouncehouse/Baptism after church. I decided to be brave and just walk right up and introduce myself to them. They are involved with some recovery groups and have started coming to Monday Nights at church. Eliza is a gourmet chef and cooked a glorious chicken and veggie dish with asparagus risotto and a beautiful whipped cream dessert.

We had fun playing Wii too. We worked up a sweat boxing. It was a really fun evening. I think the funnest part was making the people to look like us. Thank you Mike and Eliza!

Oscar Meyer

Yesterday I was finally blessed to be able to hang out with Stacey and her family for a bit. We went to Fisherman's Wharf and then we went to see Dark Knight. It was a crazy adventure! I had never been to a movie where people were waiting in a massive line just to get into the theatre. There were no seats up top when we got in, so we had to sit in the first few rows. It was a great movie, action packed but very intense. Left me thinking about a lot!

Stacey took the photos because my camera battery died, but we saw a strange man pushing a cat in a stroller that seemed like it was designed for cats. We also saw the Oscar Meyer Weiner Mobile! My life is now complete. (Pictures when I get them!)

Me and Hillary

Just making sure you know that I am not a Hillary supporter. (although listening to the cultish following of Obama I don't know...)

The picture on the side of the page is a cardboard cutout. I've had a few questions about it.... :-)

VBS

Tomorrow our VBS at church is ending, and I've had the coolest time being able to help out with it! The music is awesome, the teaching is solid, the snacks are creative, the crafts are keepers. Its been a great time meeting new people and having some fun with cute kids.

If you have kids, enroll them in a VBS. They are almost always free, provide a snack and other kids to play with, experienced leaders watching your children and its like three hours of free daycare!

Here's my favorite song so far this week! Click here for the music

Everything that moves and breathes sing a song and praise the Lord

Lay your troubles at His feet gonna sing a song and praise the Lord!

O what a lovely noise when we raise our voice to sing

I wanna thank you Lord You're the giver of all good things!

If I'm rich or if I'm poor gonna sing a song and praise the Lord

If I'm shaky or if I'm sure sing a song and praise the Lord

If I'm weak or if I'm strong sing a song and praise the Lord

If I'm short or if I'm long sing a song and praise the Lord

If I'm up or if I'm down sing a song and praise the Lord

If I'm square or if I'm round sing a song and praise the Lord

Wimbledon

I know Wimbledon is finished for the season, but I'm practicing posting movies and this is a nice clip of some tennis action last year 2007 when I went to Wimbledon for the day. As the train station says, "It's Wimble-done."

MEW

MEW stands for Most Excellent Way. I got to hang out there tonight again. We had 13 kids! It was a busy night dodging the decorations from VBS hanging from the ceiling. Miss Peggy brought ice cream which gave the kids a big high and are probably sleeping sound right now. I'm bummed I found out I'm not going to be able to go to the Bridge Benefit Dinner because of the New Kids on the Block concert. Bummer!

After all the kids were picked up we went up and hung out with people, getting to know people better. Again...I love my church family, especially everyone at MEW. They are real and not ashamed that Jesus has delivered them from addiction!

Yosemite

This weekend I went to Yosemite with my mom and Hannah. Yosemite is majestic and there is really no other way to describe it. We hiked a bit, I got too much sun and my nature fill for the next few years. Don't get me wrong, I love nature, but once you've seen one redwood tree, you've seen them all! Basically homebody became nature girl. Cabin camping, hiking, picnicking, sunglasses...I was the real deal.

We stayed in a cute KOA cabin on a lake and I learned that Ducks Feel Pain! We also made a stop to Casa De Fruta where my mom went around telling everyone they weren't allowed to sample because it was stealing....

Locks of Love

I had been thinking about it for the last two months and I finally did it today. I couldn't do it while school was in session because my students freak out at any change. When I got new glasses we had to take the first five minutes and discuss why their teacher changed glasses. When I straightened my hair I had kinder students come and ask me if I was OK because my hair was so different! School starts August 4th, so it will give me enough time to make it feel natural.

Two years ago I got the exact same cut by my friend Stacey. This time she refused and told me that Jessica would do a better job anyway. I didn't like the answer, but took it and went to Jessica. She did a wonderful job. Thanks Jessica!! I was able to save most of my hair too and donate it to an organization called Locks of Love. They take hair that is cut in 10 inches or more and make wigs for children with cancer. It's a great organization.

The only thing now is that I have to straighten it or it might look Chia-Petish.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia!!

Tuesday Fun

Tuesday night I took Hannah out to Fisherman's Wharf for some after-dinner free samples of Clam Chowder. On the way there I had to pull over to the side of the road and snap some photos of another glorious sunset. The fires are so bad that they are making the sun still beautiful! The ocean wave was a nice extra.
By the time we got to the wharf most people were gone, so it was nice to explore!

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

Last Saturday's view on the boardwalk. The weather was warm and many people were out enjoying the sun!

War In November?

Read the below post first...but this is interesting. It's long but worth it. Read it!

A military showdown with Iran may be fast approaching.
By Joel C. Rosenberg (Washington, D.C., July 8, 2008)
--
War clouds continue to build in the epicenter. Last month in Rome, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vowed that the United States and Israel would soon be "annihilated," language he had not used so explicitly since October 2005 when he promised to wipe Israel "off the map" and urged Muslims to "envision a world without the United States." This week, his regime authorized a new series of Iranian war games. He ordered the digging of 320,000 graves to bury the enemies of Islam. He is calling for the unification of the Islamic world politically and economically, including the creation of a single currency.
What's more, Iranian TV is running a new anti-Semitic documentary film series entitled, "The Secret of Armageddon." Setting the stage for a coming apocalyptic war that will usher in the Islamic Messiah known as the Mahdi or the "Twelfth Imam," the series focuses on a series of Bible prophecies that inform Jewish and Christian End Times theology. While the presentation is grossly distorted, some facts do emerge. Iranian scholar Dr. Ismail Shafe'i Sarustani , for example, tells viewers that the word "Armageddon" is "originally a Hebrew word" and "is a real geographical region, situated south of Haifa," noting that "the place was shelled by Hizbullah during the 33-day [July 2006] war." Iranian historian Mohammad-Taqi Taqipour notes that "these [Evangelical Christians], along with the Jews, believe that the War of the End of Days will take place in the desert of Megiddo, in Palestine. They believe that Jesus will return, and that then there will be a millennium of happiness."
The series, however, accuses Jews who were victims of genocide -- during the very Holocaust Ahmadinejad denies ever happened -- of actually planning to commit genocide. "There is a genocidal Zionist Jewish plan for the genocide of humanity at the hand of the Zionist Jew-boys," claims one Iranian researcher interviewed for the program. "The Zionist Jew-boys talk about a 'Greater Israel' -- from the Euphrates to the Nile -- but their actual goal is world domination." At one point, Iranian researcher Shams Al-Din Rahmani argues that "the goal of the Zionists is the total destruction of Islam."
During the June 7th episode, the narrator embraces anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and proceeds to try to justify Iran's own war plans. "Today, there are many indications that the 'hidden hands' of world Zionism were involved in the 9/11 terrorist attack. According to a large group of Western intellectuals, the Zionists are the real rulers of the United States. According to irrefutable documents published by independent American media outlets, the Zionists used intelligence agents and spies, with the full cooperation of agencies with the country, to carry out this terrorist operation in full view of the world, in order to prepare the ground for taking over Afghanistan and Iraq, and to realize the dream of a greater Israel."
Top Israeli intelligence officials, meanwhile, increasingly believe that time is running out. They believe that Iran could have nuclear weapons within a year and one former Mossad chief is urging his country's leadership to launch a massive series of air strikes against Iranian nuclear and other military facilities before it is too late. Israel's Air Force just conducted a test run of such a bombing mission.
John Bolton, the former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., says he believes Israel may strike Iran sometime in late fall or early winter, after the U.S. elections in November but before the inauguration of the next American President on January 20. A senior Pentagon officials told the Washington Post several days ago he is worried about the same scenario -- a November surprise -- prompting both President Bush and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs to make strong public statements warning the Israelis not to take such actions. Until just a few weeks ago, it was widely believed in Israel that new parliamentary elections would be held in November. But at the last moment, Defense Minister Ehud Barak withdrew his threat of voting to bring down the Olmert government for a few more months, leading some to speculate that Barak may be calculating that Israelis couldn't be fully immersed in an electoral campaign and a bombing campaign simultaneously.
The U.S. does not want Israel to strike. After all, the repercussions of such a war with Iran would be global in nature. Israel would face tens of thousands of incoming missiles not just from Iran but likely from Syria, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza and possibly the West Bank. Some of these missiles could have chemical and/or biological warheads, even if the nuclear warheads in Iran are not yet ready. Ballistic missiles would also be likely fired from Iran at the oil fields in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States, at oil tankers in the Persian Gulf and the Straight of Hormuz, and at U.S. bases and forces in Iraq. Tens of thousands of suicide bomber cells could be activated in the region -- especially in Iraq and Israel -- and perhaps even in Western Europe and the U.S. and Canada. Iranian efforts to topple Jordan's King Abdullah II and/or Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in favor of radical Islamic regimes friendly to Tehran could also be set in motion. Oil prices could shoot from $140 a barrel to $300 a barrel or more. U.S. gas prices could spike to $7-$10 or more, with horrific domestic and global economic repercussions.
No wonder Washington doesn't want a war with Iran. No wants such a war. I certainly do not, and neither do the Israelis. Yet, the U.S. does not have a convincing plan to stop the Iranian nuclear weapons program in time. Nor does the U.N., or the E.U. Diplomacy isn't working. Economic sanctions have been imposed on Iran since 1979 to little strategic effect. Unfortunately, the words of Sen. John McCain keep echoing in my head this week. In April 2006, the senior Senator from Arizona appeared on NBC's Meet the Press. He said, "there's only one thing worse than using the option of military action, and that is the Iranians acquiring nuclear weapons." For if Iran gets the Bomb, he said, "I think we could have Armageddon."

Jesus Style

I went to the Forest Theatre in Carmel-by-the-Sea tonight and watched Ghostbusters. It was a really cool outdoor theatre and it wasn't that chilly. I had never seen Ghostbusters all the way through, or I just don't remember...but either way it is amazing that Jesus came up. People are always thinking about God or Jesus or religion in some way, even way back when Ghostbusters were made.

There comes a part in the movie when one character starts talking about end times stuff and asked if the other knew Jesus. The other character quoted Revelation about the moon turning into blood. Then the guy said I like Jesus' style. I had to put out an amen to that.

I also like Jesus' style. He's a gentlemen always waiting so patiently for us. He is knocking and all we have to do is answer. He never forces himself on us, but leaves the decision to follow him up to us--otherwise it wouldn't be true love if we were robots. Jesus' style is love. He loves us more than we could ever imagine. He is always with us and will never leave us nor forsake us. (Hebrews 13:5) Websters dictionary says that forsake means to renounce or turn away from entirely. Once you say YES to Jesus he'll NEVER turn away from you. Being a christian doesn't mean problems disappear but I do not even know how someone who doesn't have Jesus can make it through a tough time. Even when we mess up, guess who is always there to help? Jesus doing things Jesus Style.

Also, the characters started talking about end times stuff. Its going to be wild. The bible says that just like a woman giving birth, her pains become closer together once the baby is ready to come. In the same way, Jesus is on his way back and the pains of the earth are becoming closer and closer. Look at all the wars, earthquakes, fires, floods, natural disasters, etc etc. It seems horrid now and its only the beginning! 20 years ago half of this stuff was not happening, but it seems now everytime I open up the morning paper there is another fire added to the list, or another murder or blah blah. I could go on and on.

So although people mock those who say, "Repent for the end is near," judging by the pains of this world....we're close. 2 Corinthians 6:2 says
“ In an acceptable time I have heard you,
And in the day of salvation I have helped you.”[a]
Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation."

You do not know what could happen tonight or later on in the day. Now is that time to make a decision to become a friend of Jesus!

Monday Monday

Went to the doctor again this morning because of an eye thing going on. It's like having a runny nose or sinus infection except its in the eye. Ever have a runny eye? She said because of all the smoke and bad air quality she's seeing a lot of it. Got some antibiotic eye drops which will kill it hopefully. I know I've been dramatic about going to the doctor this summer....but why not? I have the insurance and everything has been pretty legit. I could have just waited and suffered a small amount with this eye thing, but oh well. I was able to get a lot of reading done for my bookclub on Thursday. I'm not even finished with one book yet, but that's the way the cookie crumbles this month. I'm reading Tony Dungy's autobiography. If you enjoy football in any way and can appreciate the faith and ethics of an amazing man....this book is for you!

I then went to hang out with my kids in Seaside. I was able to babysit so the mom could get some errands done. The picture of the kids is on a previous post. I'm stoked though because Lorena (the mom) is letting her three kids come to VBS with me! She doesn't speak any English and I do not speak much Espanol, but I can understand some. I practice around her though and she helps me. I was able to learn the days of the week and use them in sentences. She seems a little unsure about it, but trusts me. It will be a great week.

I also got to go to the Most Excellent Way again and see everyone. We had 7 kids tonight and thankfully Hannah has been coming with me every week, otherwise I don't know what we'd do! There was a little boy named Pasco, and for a Walla Walla girl like me...all I think of is Richland and Kennewick as well.

I will take pictures of something tomorrow and post them, because these writing only entries are boring, even for me. My plan is to go to 9:30 bible study, come back and have Greta's fit club and then meet up with a friend from Salinas and go to Farmer's Market with her and Hannah. We'll see how it all ends up!

05 July 2008

4th of July

We beat the Brits. That's why we have our independence this many years later. Why on earth do we say 4th of July as the Brits would say. Why don't we say July 4th like every other date in the year?

Either way I had a great time last night at The Bridge BBQ. I asked if we could have one a month ago so my friend Hannah could see how fun everyone is. It turned out to be great! We had food, entertainment by Clarence the Clown, Worship and singing with everyone and then we walked down to the ocean on Cannery Row and watched the fireworks! I love my church family!

Get Smart

My friend Kristin (who is now a Kindergarten teacher in Salinas!) and I went out to Pacific Grove, had some lunch and saw Get Smart. The movie was a waste...wait for it to come out on video, but the company was wonderful.

My Cocktail

This is the juice you have to drink when getting a colonoscopy. It has the consistancy of oily stuff. It's clear but thick and tastes nasty. You are suppose to drink 3/4 in 3 hours and then the following morning drink the rest. I drank that much in about 5 hours. I put the lemon lime flavoring in it, so at least it tasted 7-upy oil.

Church BBQ/Baptism

We had a great time last Sunday after church at our BBQ/Baptism/Bouncehouse extravaganza. I did take pictures of the actual fun we were having, but I took this one because of the smoke you can see in the photo! It was raining ash everywhere. We are living in the end times! Pray for Big Sur, its still only 3% contained. They say in a month they are hoping to have it fully contained....in a month......that's awhile away.

Glorious Sunset

As I was driving on Highway 1 I passed this and couldn't resist taking a picture. Isn't it beautiful?!

Article from online news source

Brenton sent me an email saying I need to post this on my blog. =)

America remains a nation of believers, but a new survey finds most Americans don't feel their religion is the only way to eternal life — even if their faith tradition teaches otherwise.

The findings, revealed Monday in a survey of 35,000 adults, can either be taken as a positive sign of growing religious tolerance, or disturbing evidence that Americans dismiss or don't know fundamental teachings of their own faiths.

Among the more startling numbers in the survey, conducted last year by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life: 57 percent of evangelical church attenders said they believe many religions can lead to eternal life, in conflict with traditional evangelical teaching.

In all, 70 percent of Americans with a religious affiliation shared that view, and 68 percent said there is more than one true way to interpret the teachings of their own religion.

"The survey shows religion in America is, indeed, 3,000 miles wide and only three inches deep," said D. Michael Lindsay, a Rice University sociologist of religion.

"There's a growing pluralistic impulse toward tolerance and that is having theological consequences," he said.

Earlier data from the Pew Forum's U.S. Religious Landscape Survey, released in February, highlighted how often Americans switch religious affiliation. The newly released material looks at religious belief and practice as well as the impact of religion on society, including how faith shapes political views.

The report argues that while relatively few people — 14 percent — cite religious beliefs as the main influence on their political thinking, religion still plays a powerful indirect role.

The study confirmed some well-known political dynamics, including stark divisions over abortion and gay marriage, with the more religiously committed taking conservative views on the issues.

But it also showed support across religious lines for greater governmental aid for the poor, even if it means more debt and stricter environmental laws and regulations.

By many measures, Americans are strongly religious: 92 percent believe in God, 74 percent believe in life after death and 63 percent say their respective scriptures are the word of God.

But deeper investigation found that more than one in four Roman Catholics, mainline Protestants and Orthodox Christians expressed some doubts about God's existence, as did six in ten Jews.

Another finding almost defies explanation: 21 percent of self-identified atheists said they believe in God or a universal spirit, with 8 percent "absolutely certain" of it.

"Look, this shows the limits of a survey approach to religion," said Peter Berger, a theology and sociology professor at Boston University. "What do people really mean when they say that many religions lead to eternal life? It might mean they don't believe their particular truth at all. Others might be saying, 'We believe a truth but respect other people, and they are not necessarily going to hell.'"

Luis Lugo, director of the Pew Forum, said that more research is planned to answer those kinds of questions, but that earlier, smaller surveys found similar results.

Nearly across the board, the majority of religious Americans believe many religions can lead to eternal life: mainline Protestants (83 percent), members of historic black Protestant churches (59 percent), Roman Catholics (79 percent), Jews (82 percent) and Muslims (56 percent).

By similar margins, people in those faith groups believe in multiple interpretations of their own traditions' teachings. Yet 44 percent of the religiously affiliated also said their religion should preserve its traditional beliefs and practices.

"What most people are saying is, 'Hey, we don't have a hammer-lock on God or salvation, and God's bigger than us and we should respect that and respect other people,'" said the Rev. Tom Reese, a senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University.

"Some people are like butterflies that go from flower to flower, going from religion to religion — and frankly they don't get that deep into any of them," he said.

Beliefs about eternal life vary greatly, even within a religious tradition.

Some Christians hold strongly to Jesus' words as described in John 14:6: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Others emphasize the wideness of God's grace.

The Catholic church teaches that the "one church of Christ ... subsists in the Catholic Church" alone and that Protestant churches, while defective, can be "instruments of salvation."

Roger Oldham, a vice president with the executive committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, bristled at using the word "tolerance" in the analysis.

"If by tolerance we mean we're willing to engage or embrace a multitude of ways to salvation, that's no longer evangelical belief," he said. "The word 'evangelical' has been stretched so broadly, it's almost an elastic term."

Others welcomed the findings.

"It shows increased religious security. People are comfortable with other traditions even if they're different," said the Rev. C. Welton Gaddy, president of the Interfaith Alliance. "It indicates a level of humility about religion that would be of great benefit to everyone."

More than most groups, Catholics break with their church, and not just on issues like abortion and homosexuality. Only six in 10 Catholics described God as "a person with whom people can have a relationship" — which the church teaches — while three in 10 described God as an "impersonal force."

"The statistics show, more than anything else, that many who describe themselves as Catholics do not know or understand the teachings of their church," said Denver Roman Catholic Archbishop Charles Chaput. "Being Catholic means believing what the Catholic church teaches. It is a communion of faith, not simply of ancestry and family tradition. It also means that the church ought to work harder at evangelizing its own members."

Stuff

It is the 3rd of July and I'm still enjoying my summer vacation although it will be finished very soon. In about 2 weeks I'll have to go unpack all my boxes because of the move and then we start school August 4th! Ouch! I'm already planning my Fall Break trip though, thinking about Christmastime, Spring Break will be nice and then hopefully next year at this time I'll be on a cruise to Croatia. Gotta love the teaching calendar!

I still need to post some pictures. I survived the recovery of my colonoscopy. My arms are pretty bruised up, especially my wrist where they blew 5 veins before poking in the right place.

Todays agenda includes: Continuing on Greta's Fit Club, paying for meat for the The Bridge/Hannah BBQ for tomorrow, picking up a 4th of July t-shirt at Old Navy for 5 bucks, get a blood test to make sure my liver is OK from all my anti-fungals, lunch and Get Smart at 1 with a friend, and then we'll see after that.

Geez I have a lot to do and its 8:45 and I just got out of bed. Time to move! Hasta Pasta!

Colonoscopy

Yesterday I got a colonoscopy and I survived...and don't worry...no gross pictures. The whole thing was pretty gross, but I only remember half of it.

The worst part is the prep. You have to drink this really nasty tasting clear liquid. I was suppose to fast all day Sunday and starting at 4pm I was suppose to 'rapidly' drink 8oz of this liquid every 10-15 minutes. Instead of rapidly drinking it, it took 30 minutes to drink 8oz. I am a huge whiner though. By 11pm I was suppose to 3/4 finished drinking the liquid. I was about almost half way.

I was then suppose to get up at 5am and finish drinking the rest of the cocktail. I got up at 6 and drank 2 cups and then said forget it. No more....

My dear friend Janet took me in and waited the whole time. The second worst part of the procedure was putting an IV in me. They couldn't find any veins. They poked me and then would say, "Darn it I blew the vein." I heard that from 4 different nurses, so they finally brought in Dr. Luba. He tried the top of my hand, which HURT a lot, and blew two different veins. He then went in my right wrist and blew 4 veins before finally getting an IV in. It took 45 minutes!

I went into the operating room where it was freezing. They gave me 4 blankets put some medicine in me and within 10 seconds I was out. I woke up 30 minutes later and the procedure was finished.

Katie Couric's husband died of colon cancer at the age of 48, so Katie went and had hers done on national television. If your at least 50 you need to get one done.
